October Gold on the Roaring Fork: Chasing Trophy Trout in Low Water

Listen up. It is October 16, and if you aren’t on the water, you are missing the best window of the year. The Roaring Fork is sitting at 115 CFS below Maroon Creek, and while that is skinny water, it is exactly what we need to isolate those trophy trout. The Aspen area fly fishing scene is quiet right now, and that is just the way I like it. When the water gets this low and slow, the fish get spooky, but they also get aggressive. You need to drop your tippet size and keep your shadow off the water. I have been putting my new Clackacraft drift boat on the water daily, sliding through the runs between Aspen and Basalt with surgical precision. When you are driftboat fishing in these conditions, you don't need to be a hero with your casting—you need to be a technician. We are seeing steady hatches of BWOs and those late-season Caddis. If you want to connect with big rainbows and big browns, you have to target the deeper, cooler pockets. Tie on a size 18-22 BWO or a small, flashy nymph, and stay persistent. If the dry fly game slows down under the harsh midday sun, get your flies deep and tight to the structure. Whether you are hitting the access points from Carbondale up through Basalt or scouting toward Glenwood Springs, the fish are keyed into the drift. This time of year is also prime for those looking for something different. I have been taking out groups for bachelor and bachelorette parties who want a unique Colorado adventure that involves more than just bar hopping. A day on the river in a drift boat beats a casino any day. I’ve got my Sage fly fishing setups ready and my Hardy fly fishing reels tuned for that first run of a fat autumn brown. Don’t wait for the ice to set in. If you want to experience the best scenic float fishing in the Roaring Fork Valley, give us a shout. We know every riffle, every pool, and exactly where the heavy hitters are holding. Grab your gear, call Aspen Angling Company, and let’s get you on the water before the season turns.
