October Gold: Chasing Trophy Trout on the Roaring Fork River
It is October 18, 2026, and if you haven't been out on the water lately, you’re missing the sweet spot. The Roaring Fork is running low and clear at around 115 CFS below Maroon Creek, and while that demands a stealthy approach, it is exactly the kind of water where I hunt down those big browns and big rainbows. I have been spending my mornings in my new Clackacraft drift boat, and there is no better way to cover the stretch from Aspen down to Basalt when the water is this thin. With the sun hitting the water hard during midday, the fishing has been a game of morning and evening finesse. The BWOs are starting to show in sizes 18-22, and those picky, trophy trout are keyed in. Forget the heavy stuff; if you aren't throwing tiny, shiny nymphs in the deep, shaded pockets, you are just going for a boat ride. When the hatch kicks off, I’m reaching for my Sage fly fishing setup to deliver a delicate presentation with a size 18-22 BWO pattern. If the surface activity picks up, a Missing Link Caddis or a high-vis PMD imitation can still turn heads. Whether you are launching near the Aspen area, hitting the pockets near Basalt, or scouting the lower stretches down toward Carbondale and Glenwood Springs, the key right now is to keep a thermometer in your vest and respect the trout. The valley is showing its autumn colors, and the scenic float fishing right now is as good as it gets. I’ve been putting my Hardy fly fishing reels to the test lately, and they’ve handled some of the strongest runs I’ve seen all season. We’ve been booking plenty of groups lately—if you are planning a bachelor or bachelorette party and want something more memorable than a bar crawl, a guided driftboat fishing trip is the ultimate Colorado adventure. We get you out of the city and into the heart of the river, chasing fish that will make your hands shake when you finally net them. Don't wait for the first real freeze to set in. The window to land that personal best is wide open, but you need to know exactly which run holds the giants. Get in touch with us at Aspen Angling Company, grab a seat in the boat, and let’s get you hooked up with some trophy trout before the snow flies for good.
