Fryingpan River Tactics: Chasing Trophy Trout in October

It is October 7, 2026, and the air in the Roaring Fork Valley has finally found that crisp, high-altitude bite that makes the Fryingpan River come alive. If you have been hiding from the midday heat, stop it. The water coming out of Ruedi is ice-cold and, despite some lingering murkiness near the mile marker 8 stretch, the fish are keyed into a buffet of Green Drakes, PMDs, and those pesky BWOs that keep us humble. I have spent 30 years on these waters, and I still get a kick out of watching a stubborn brown inhale a midge pattern at first light. We are sitting at roughly 115-120 CFS, which is perfect for stalking those trophy trout that call this tailwater home. When the sun hangs high, these fish get smart and picky, but that is why you hire a guide. Whether you are throwing a Sage fly fishing rod or testing out a new Hardy reel, you need to be precise. The trout here are spoiled rotten—they will ignore a caddis like it is stale bread, so keep your mysis shrimp and micro-baetis imitations tight to the structure. I have been spending a lot of time lately in my new Clackacraft drift boat, and there is no better way to see the river than through the lens of a guided float. If you are planning a bachelor or bachelorette party and want to swap the bar scene for some scenic float fishing, let’s get you on the oars. We cover the best water from Aspen down through Basalt, and if we want to chase bigger water, we can hit the Colorado below Grizzly Creek or the classic sections of the Eagle near the fairgrounds. I am Woody Kiehl, and at Aspen Angling Company, we don’t just take you fishing; we take you to the big fish. If you want to put a net under some big rainbows and browns that will actually keep you up at night, stop reading and start calling. The hatches are timed perfectly, the river is steady, and my boat is ready to launch. Let’s get out there and stick some monsters before the deep freeze sets in. Book your trip with Aspen Angling Company today and let's get after it.
