Fryingpan River Fly Fishing Update: October 2026 Conditions and Tactics

It is October 14th, and the Fryingpan River is acting like its usual temperamental self. If you are headed up toward Ruedi, keep in mind that the water remains cloudy and murky for the first four miles due to the dam diversion work. It is a 7 out of 10 for fishing right now, but you have to know where to look and how to adjust. The flows are sitting steady at 117 CFS, and while the water clarity isn't perfect, the trout are still eating. These Fryingpan fish are some of the most spoiled, selective trophy trout in the state, and they aren't going to make it easy for you. I have spent thirty years chasing big rainbows and big browns in this valley, and even I get humbled by them occasionally. Right now, it is all about the Blue Winged Olives and midges. We are still seeing the occasional straggling Green Drake or PMD, but don't count on them. You want to be on the water at first light or staying late until the shadows hit the canyon floor. When the sun is high overhead, the bite shuts down; that is the perfect time to grab a sandwich and check your knots. If you are nymphing the deeper pools, keep your patterns small—size 20 to 24 midges and a Mysis shrimp are your bread and butter. If you're chasing them on the surface, have your BWO emergers ready. Whether you are running a Sage fly fishing setup or testing out the action on your Hardy fly fishing gear, you need a drag-free drift. If you want to experience the best Aspen area fly fishing, forget the frustration of navigating these flows alone. I spend most of my time behind the oars of my new Clackacraft drift boat, and while we mostly stick to the Roaring Fork and Colorado for that classic driftboat fishing experience, the Fryingpan access is unparalleled. If you have a group coming into town for a bachelor or bachelorette party, skip the bars and get them on the water for a unique Colorado adventure. Nothing bonds a group like watching a client net a thick, holdover rainbow on a 6x tippet. Whether you are looking for scenic float fishing near Basalt or a technical wade trip up the Pan, Aspen Angling Company has the expertise to put you on the fish. Stop guessing and let’s get on the water. Give us a call at Aspen Angling Company to book your trip before the winter freeze sets in.
