Fryingpan River Fly Fishing Update: October 2026 Conditions

It is October 14, 2026, and if you are not on the water in the Roaring Fork Valley, you are missing the best window of the year. The Fryingpan is currently sitting at a steady 117 CFS, and while that change in the dam release has left the first few miles below Ruedi Reservoir a bit off-color with sediment, don't let it scare you off. The Pan is still producing. I have been out on my new Clackacraft drift boat scouting the deeper runs, and the big rainbows and browns are exactly where you expect them to be when the water gets a little color: aggressively feeding on the tailouts and soft edges.

Yes, the water clarity in those upper four miles is a bit murky, but that just means the fish feel a little more secure. You have to hunt for the trophy trout, but they are there. We are seeing solid BWO hatches and consistent midge activity at first and last light. You might still spot the odd Green Drake or PMD, but those spoiled Fryingpan trout are mostly looking for the small stuff. Keep your leaders long, your tippet light, and be precise with your drifts. If you are rigged up with a Sage fly fishing rod and a crisp reel, you will have the backbone needed to stick these fish in the current. I’ve been relying on my Hardy fly fishing gear lately, and it handles the sensitive tippets required for these picky feeders perfectly.

Midday sun is still a mood killer, so target the low-light hours. If you are looking to get into some serious action, let me remind you that Aspen Angling Company is the go-to for more than just solo outings. We do incredible guided trips for bachelor or bachelorette parties who want a unique Colorado adventure. There is nothing like a day of scenic float fishing to break the tension before the wedding bells ring. Whether you are looking for that driftboat fishing experience on the Roaring Fork near Basalt and Aspen or a technical day on the Pan, we have the experience to put you on fish.

Get your gear scrubbed at the cleaning stations to keep our home waters healthy—be a pain in the A.N.S. Don’t wait for the ice to set in. Book your guided trip with me at Aspen Angling Company today, and let’s put you on the fish of a lifetime.
