Fall Fishing the Roaring Fork: Chasing Trophy Trout in the Roaring Fork Valley

Listen, it’s October 25th, and if you aren’t out on the Roaring Fork right now, you’re missing the best time of the year. We’re sitting at a steady 115 CFS below Maroon Creek, and while the water is low and slow, the fish are keyed up. The crowds have thinned out, the air is crisp, and those big browns are starting to get aggressive with the spawn looming. This is when we put the new Clackacraft drift boat to work. When the water is this thin, you need a boat that handles the technical stuff without spooking the lunkers in the pools near Basalt or down toward Carbondale. Out here, I’m putting my clients on the best water from Aspen down to Glenwood Springs, focusing on the deep, cold pockets where these fish like to hang. We’ve got BWOs and midges keeping the surface busy, but don’t ignore the sub-surface game. I’m running small, shiny nymphs—size 18-24—down deep. If you want to hunt big rainbows and those trophy trout we’re famous for, you need to be precise. I’ve been guiding in the Roaring Fork Valley for over 30 years, and whether you’re swinging a Sage fly fishing setup or testing out the latest Hardy fly fishing reels, the technique remains the same: stealth and patience. If the dry fly bite slows, we switch up. Even with the lower flows, the driftboat fishing remains the most effective way to cover miles of water while providing a world-class experience. And hey, if you’re looking to elevate a bachelor or bachelorette party beyond the standard bar scene, there’s nothing like a scenic float fishing trip to give your crew a real Colorado adventure they won’t forget. We take pride in the Aspen area fly fishing scene, and my job is to make sure you leave with a bent rod and a story. Don’t let the calendar scare you off; the fish are hungry and the river is clear. It’s time to get out there. Ready to hook into something substantial? Give us a shout at Aspen Angling Company and let’s get you on the books. I’ve got the boat ready and the flies tied, so let’s see if we can find you the fish of a lifetime.
