Chasing Monster Trout on the Colorado River: Fall Conditions Update
It’s October 5th, and if you’ve been watching the gauges, you know the Colorado River has been a temperamental beast lately. We saw some rough water and closures just a few weeks back, but the mud is clearing, the flows are hovering around 1,360 CFS, and the river is finally starting to fish like the legend it is. I’m Woody Kiehl, and after 30 years of rowing these currents, I can tell you that when the Colorado settles into this flow, it’s not about numbers—it’s about hunting. We’re talking about those pissed-off big rainbows and big browns that lurk under the deep seams below Glenwood Springs and through the stretch below Grizzly Creek. If you’re looking for a trophy trout that’ll peel line off your Hardy or Sage fly fishing setup before you can even blink, this is your water. Right now, the food menu is sophisticated. We’re seeing consistent hatches of Blue Winged Olives in the 18-22 range and a mix of tiny Tricos and midges. I’ve been putting clients on fish using Harrop’s CDC Biot Dun and various trailing shuck emergers. If the trout are looking down, don't be afraid to pull a sculpin pattern through the heavy structure; that’s where the wall-hangers hide. I’ve been running our new Clackacraft drift boat, which is the only way to effectively cover this much ground. Scenic float fishing through these canyons isn't just about the angling; it's about seeing the valley from a perspective most folks never get. Whether you're an expert or hosting a bachelor or bachelorette party looking for a unique Colorado adventure that’s a hell of a lot better than a night at the bar, a guided trip is the way to go. We handle the rowing and the technical knowledge, so you can focus on the drift. Aspen area fly fishing is as good as it gets this time of year, but you have to respect the river—it’s big, it’s brawling, and it demands your attention. Don’t be that guy who shows up unprepared. Clean your gear, check the flows, and come see me at Aspen Angling Company. Let’s get you in the boat and on the water before the first real snow kills the dry fly bite. Book your trip today and let's go find the one that's been waiting for you all season.
